Coordinating Wall Guards with Door Swing and Hardware
A wall guard near a door should be checked against the complete door movement and its hardware. Protecting the wall does not help if the guard creates a new collision with a handle, leaf or cleaning trolley.

Selection considerations
Trace the door swing on the finished plan and review it on site. Note the handle projection, closer, stops and the equipment approaching from each direction. Identify whether contact comes from the door itself or from a cart turning through the opening; these are different problems.
Set the guard termination with the door contractor and the protection supplier. Keep any end cap or return within the approved system arrangement. Do not trim away a functional part simply to make a clash disappear, and do not modify a rated door assembly without the required approval.
Check a sample or local mockup through the full door travel before committing a corridor quantity. Record the accepted termination and associated code on the elevation. Repeat the check when door hardware or wall build-up changes, rather than assuming an earlier approval covers the new condition.
Before you specify or order
- Trace the full door movement
- Survey hardware and trolley projections
- Agree the guard termination
- Recheck changed hardware

Common question
Is the door's plan swing line enough to clear a guard?
It is a useful starting point, but the finished hardware, guard projection and actual operating conditions also need review.
